number of messages you have on gmail x the number of times it checked
for them.

The bug on Pidgin's Trac was automatically closed, but it looks like a
won't fix because the protocol does not provide the required info: the
protocol seems to tell the number of new mails since last check (I did
not check this)
If that's right, I believe Pidgin should not display new mails like

Also, i recall i had this problem with an hotmail/msn account as well as
an gmail account, so perhaps our issue is not limited to type of
account.
