upgrade worked well for you!
I will close the bug now, I'm pretty sure the window becomes
unresponsive is a network issue. There is a open bug about this against
update-manager already.

This sounds like a transient network problem (server overloaded etc).

I agree that the first attempt to upgrade was a network issue... I'm not
so sure about the second one. The window became completely
unresponsive.. and no applications (like GNOME Calculator or Terminal)
would start up. I would get the Starting Terminal... notification,
but then it would go away
