Public bug reported: I've been trying to get hybrid graphics working on my Dell Inspirion 15R and I get the low graphics mode when starting up. This is on Raring.
I have tried fglrx & fglrx-updates from the restricted archive, AMD sources, and the fglrx-updates found in ppa:andrikos/ppa and all fail the way. The X server seg faults every time (see attached Xorg log). I have also tried the workaround at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI#WORKAROUND. I even downgraded the xserver-xorg-video-intel package to the one found in ppa:andrikos/ppa. I will also add the info from apport-collect to this bug. --- .tmp.unity.support.test.1: ApportVersion: 2.8-0ubuntu4 Architecture: amd64 CompizPlugins: No value set for `/apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/active_plugins' CompositorRunning: compiz DistUpgraded: 2013-01-04 15:43:42,670 DEBUG enabling apt cron job DistroCodename: raring DistroRelease: Ubuntu 13.04 DistroVariant: ubuntu DkmsStatus: vboxhost, 4.2.6, 3.8.0-0-generic, x86_64: installed vboxhost, 4.2.6, 3.8.0-2-generic, x86_64: installed vboxhost, 4.2.6, 3.8.0-3-generic, x86_64: installed GraphicsCard: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0116] (rev 07) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Dell Device [1028:04ca] Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Caicos [Radeon HD 6400M/7400M Series] [1002:6760] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Dell Device [1028:04ca] InstallationDate: Installed on 2012-11-13 (79 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 12.10 "Quantal Quetzal" - Release amd64 (20121017.5) MachineType: Dell Inc.
