it seems to happen because it crashes when it tried to load
introduction.lyx. I know the solution is not pretty but it should get
you working in the meantime

I have seen this error with lyx version 1.5.3-1 and libqtcore4 version
4.4.0-1ubuntu5-hardy1. In my case, the error occurs when you attempt to
open a file (any file). (It also, unhelpfully, tells the user to read
the bug-reporting instructions in Help-Introduction, which is also a
LyX file and
Alex La Hurreau, the bug you are experiencing is Bug 228067, which is a
newer bug. This bug occurred starting in May 2008, as a result of LyX's
troubles with the new qt4.4 that has been uploaded to Ubuntu 8.04
(Hardy) backports. I will subscribe you to that bug. If you wish to
