BTW: It works with the current Ubuntu 13.04 which is shipped with an up-
to-date lensfun 0.2.7. So it seems to be related to ufraw version 0.18
or a certain build config in some distributions.

ufraw 0.18 and directly with GIMP with gimp-ufraw 0.18 on Quantal.
Do you have any other GIMP plugins installed that may be causing the
issue?
Where did you get lensfun 0.2.6? Quantal has 0.2.5-2. What is the output of:

I also have gimp-gmic installed.
Your problem with opening the file in GIMP may be related to the PPA build of
liblensfun0 you have installed.
Please try the backport of 0.2.7 from Raring available here:
