Public bug reported:

At least without any manual installing of a few packages first, most notably
libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-quantal:i386
Ex.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 wine1.4-i386:i386 : Depends: libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 or
                              libgl1:i386
Depends: libglu1-mesa:i386 but it is not going to be
installed or
                              libglu1:i386
Recommends: gettext:i386 but it is not going to be
installed

Installing libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-quantal:i386 (& whatever deps it pulls) will
then allow
sudo apt-get install wine1.4 to work or a synaptic install to proceed without
creating a borked install
(synaptic will prior to libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-quantal:i386 install remove all the
lts-quantal packages & not replace them completely
