At the current time in development testing of ubuntu 13.10 the audio
system works, but at the time of the upgrade the audio function was
still broken in 13.04 with the mainstream patches.

Still same issue for me, just upgraded today. Speakers on laptop are
working fine but when headphones are connected, the sound continues to
play through the laptop speakers instead of headphones.

kernel 3.9 solves the problem. By using 3.8.0-22 the Audio setting page
is showing two devices instead of the one Speakers - Internal audio

To
suggestion #9 solves partially the problem because introduces others. I
try to explain what happens in the Output audio page :
kernel 3.8.0-22:
Devices: Speakers + Analog output (no Headphone when they are connected. To
make it work I have to unmute the speaker through alsamixer)
Paste this as a new line to the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
options snd-hda-intel model=ref
The headphone jacks will work after reboot.
There are a few other tweaks for the hp dv6 is this post:

For those who may have upgraded from a previous release, one (maybe
obvious) workaround is to boot from your previous kernel (3.5 series for
ubuntu 12.10). The bootsplash will be a blank screen, but both
networking and sound will work correctly.

There is no linux-image-extras package and you loose the wifi so it's
not for daily use but it fixes the headphone issue. Is it going to be
backported or do we have to wait to 13.10 to have it fixed?

Tested on 3.9.0-030900rc7-generic the headphone jack sound output was
fixed.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.9 kernel[0]. You will need to install both the linux-image and linux-
image-extra .deb packages.
If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
reassigning to linux source package to better conform to the triaging
sound bugs section of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems
