My work around
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
but this doesn't solve the bug

Hey and Thanks!.. I did get it to go. Cleaned things out, enabled
networking at boot and ran dpkg and it blew through it. Blissfully ignorant
trying different things and it went if this info helps

I can't sort out how to reproduce this locally. Has anyone come up with
a decent reproduction recipe yet?

I reproduced the bug like this:
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Then from Software Updater update your system, it will hang on unpacking
linux-image***, wait a few minutes and force close the Software Updater.
Then the bug reporter will show
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

Can you perform the following:
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
Then re-install the updates to see if this error still happens?

I tried to reproduce this bug, but I've been unable to. I'll also try
to upgrade a couple of other machines.
