Ubuntu12.10 fails to install grub. Manually installing also
Resolution: I removed the second HDD. When forced to write the boot
record to the SDD the install runs properly. The HDD can be reinstalled
after the system is rebooted.

According to your logs you are using LVM, but there are no LVM
partitions shown. Can you post the output of sudo parted -l?

As requested, output of 'sudo parted -l is below. However this is only
for the SSD. I haven't yet remounted the HDD because I am too busy
installing and running codes. The curious thing is that this worked
properly under 12.04 but I messed it up somehow going to 12.10.
