I did not change anything since then.
This is definitely not a bug in pidgin.

Having same problem with facebook xmpp, all contacts are shown offline.
I am not using ubuntu and i have tried pidgin and connecting via ejabberd
spectrum transport.
For me, this seems to be a problem with facebook.
