I can confirm this bug. (Beagle Search 0.3.9 - Ubuntu 9.10 32bit)
beagled-helper will eat up all of the system memory and about 500mb of
the swap, the system will be unresponsive during that time, once
beagled-helper stops whatever it is doing running swapoff and swapon
will return the system to

I've had this happen too (it used 1,6 GB. which is probably all it could
grab) I think it started happening after I added some new entries in the
external-filters.xml (I wanted it to index some extra txt files). I've
now disabled this extra rule to see if this still happens without the
rule. I'm
