Never mind that -- the problem continues, although turning off auto-mute seems to have changed the character of the distortion, making it slightly quieter, and it also made it unresponsive to the "rm -r ~/.pulse ~/.asound* ~/.pulse-cookie" command. However, I discovered that the left channel is on
