Had a non-fatal GPU hang (possibly a different issue), but when I tried
to cat the file I got:
cat: /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state: Cannot allocate memory

That's not actually the relevant error-state, but an earlier non-fatal
one. If you look in dmesg you can see when that first error-state is
generated prior to the hang and clear it with echo
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state and then attach the error for
the fatal hang.

You're right, an error occurred the previous night, when the computer
was unattended, and I didn't notice (dmesg output below). I rebooted
anyway so the error state is now lost.

The error state persists until it is manually reset (or rebooted). We
only keep one error state, the first error is usually the most important
and so later errors do not overwrite it. This bug is one of the
exceptions.
