I have the same problem (jokosher 0.9, ubuntu 8.04). I followed Laszlo's
advice to lower the recording sample rate (only works on lowest setting
of 8000 hz), which made recording possible (i saw a signal when playing
my guitar), but i haven't succeeded at playback, then jokosher crashes.

Try changing the recording sample rate in the preferences dialog. Often
the problem is that alsa reports that it is capable of handling a
particular audio rate, but when you actually try to record it doesn't
work.
If none of the available audio rates work, then you might want to
consider testing
