It was in Gutsy Beta
I have the newest full version of gutsy and I still have duplicated
Desktop entries in the places menu.
There is only one bookmark for Desktop in Nautilus, and if I delete that one
bookmark then I get only one entry in the Places menu.
But then, if I am looking through folders in Nautilus, I
Reopening, there is still an issue because something create a non
translated Desktop directory on the CD which takes over the xdg
translated version for compatibility reasons

Thanks for clarifying this, Sebastien! Here's what I now get with my
setup:
After removing the non-translated Desktop directory (leaving translated
in Place), and logging in afterwise, the home directory magically
becomes the desktop, cannot figure out why :(

Yeah, if it can't find the desk it does just that. There is actually
identical behaviour with the Documents directory. If that exists with
that exact name, file-dialogs default to it. Interesting side-node: on
localized desktops the file dialogs
That's not a gnome-panel bug, the issue is that on the CD there is a
Desktop directory created to put the ubiquity icon and the Examples
link, those ideally should use the xdg API and use the translated
version. That points to an another bug though. When Desktop exists
then DESKTOP xdg-user-dirs

Here is my .gtk-bookmarks file, and I've also attached a screenshot of
my Places menu where you can see the Desktop appears twice.

That's not a bug, as described the Desktop item is a special case and
should not be bookmarked, if you used a buggy version of xdg-user-dirs-
gtk you should remove the bookmark now and that will work correctly

There's something weird about this: today I noticed that I did not have
any Documents shortcut in my Places menu, so I had to add a bookmark for
it manually.
Wasn't the panel supposed to have a special case for the Documents
folder, which was the source of this bug? 'cause it didn't seem like it

ok, thanks for the clarification. It used to be that way though (I
remember in edgy/feisty, if I had a folder called Documents on the
desktop, it would be automatically shown in the Places menu, even when
we didn't have that xdg users dirs package)

I have chosen the Russian locale, and the bookmarked Documents folder is
automatically created with a translated name: Документы, and it is
called Документы in gtk bookmarks and the panel.

I've been getting this since the early alphas too. Documents and Desktop
is repeated, but editing the ~/.gtk-bookmarks file like Nick suggested
made it all good (sort of, Open ~/Picturesorwhatever is not a dandy
description).

article on Digg a month ago and had shots of Ubuntu, and guess what, the
guy who had written that preview had the bug. This should be fixed as
it's way too visible and easy to reproduce.

i observed the duplication when i installed gutsy from the life cd
(before anything else done). places has duplicate entries for documents
and desktop, but not for other entries.
this is a gutsy life cd downloaded on monday 3 sept!

The moving drives into a submenu automatically happens when the places
menu gets too large. Although I personally consider it only too large
when it won't fit on the screen instead of half the screen. (the current
behavior) .. but that's another bug/feature..

This happened with the new gnome-menus update in which they fixed some
problems with spaces and updates from alacarte. One of the other things
it does now, which I'm not sure if I like is that all cifs mounts used
to show up as a place, but now they have been moved into a Removable
Devices

You guys probably already noticed this, but the duplicate bug #133565
contains an explanation of what probably is causing this for you, and
why it is still a bug needing a fix even with the simple workaround.
In retrospect, I should have done that as a comment to this (thanks for
pointing out the
Confirm with fully updated Gutsy. I have tried deleting the duplicate
items out of the Nautilus Bookmarks, but they are re-created when I log
back in. Only one occurrence of Desktop and Documents appears in the
Bookmarks.

recreate another user, the bug does not occur.

I can confirm this bug as well, fully updated Gutsy, Nautilus v 2.19.4;
the documents folder is represented twice in the places menu on the Menu
Bar. No bookmarks have been created and it does reproduce itself with a
new user being created as well.
