I had no problems with the CD release version of Hardy Heron 8.10
Kubuntu-alt on the exact same hardware that I mentioned in my October
posting. So I guess whatever caused the problem may be fixed now.

This happened on all the old Alternate-Install CD's. If I remember
correctly it has something to do with setting a static IP address. I did
once have a workaround (by dropping to a 2nd tty and doing something)
but for the life of me I can't remember what it was.
This bug was present in Breezy and
Ubuntu 7.10 Alternate AMD64 hangs at 83%, whilst retrieving kernel-
generic, for over an hour on my Intel Q6600, 4 GB RAM, nVidia 8600GTS
before I force reboot. It was running Ubuntu 7.04 32-bit with no
problems so I'm trying again with fixed IP. There is a graphics issue
with the Ubuntu 7.10
Same here for both the live cd install as well as x86 alternate of
gutsy. And yes it hangs for 15 minutes or so and continues. Not a show
stopper; at least for me.

I can verify that 7.10 Kubuntu-Alt Halts (at 83% in my case) as
described above. In my case for about 15 minutes. PIII 128Mb RAM so it
might be due to low resources. Kubuntu regular wouldn't install at all.

FYI: I just had this exact problem installing from CD the released version of
Gutsy (7.10) Kubuntu-Alt trying to install on an old Compaq Deskpro EN. It
stalled for several (five?) minutes with no disk (HDD or CD) activity, but then
something timed out and installation continued.
