My problem was solved by post http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2673301postcount=11 . Again, I have an SB Live! card. I went into volume control and clicked on the Switches tab and there was a check box nest to SB Live Analog/Digital Output Jack. I unchecked it and the fuzzyness went away.

I tried reducing everything in alsa mixer, but nothing to do, still get this annoying distortion on some songs (those with a lot of bass). It's a big problem I think since I kind listen to lots of my songs because they sound so bad. -- [Gutsy] Sound peaks on loud sounds

Many Linux distro - and as far I remember - had this overdrive feature - on many different soundcards (all cards but not all distros - does DSL have it?). I always had to reduce the master and player's volume. I think this is alsa unwanted feature -- [Gutsy] Sound peaks on loud sounds
