Just in case someone stumbles upon this: I had similar problem (Saucy
after upgrade from 13.04) but with Xorg not even trying to load the
radeon driver.
Solution was to install xserver-xorg-video-ati (ati driver triggered
loading of the radeon driver).
It still puzzles me why radeon driver wasn't

Removing and reinstalling the package xserver-xorg-video-ati, now there
are no longer errors in xorg (so it looks like the radeon module is
loaded), but still 3D rendering is software based (llvmpipe), and now
the system is less responsive than before. On the good part I can use
two monitors.

Checking the automatic attachment xserver.errors.txt (what does this
file correspond to?), I see the following error messages:
Failed to load module "radeon" (module does not exist, 0)
Failed to load module "ati" (module does not exist, 0)
Failed to load module "modesetting" (module does not exist
