from libxmpi4c2 to libxmpi4 and this can only be done during an LTS
release.

The xmpi package has carried an Ubuntu delta since the CXX transition in Breezy.
My intention in the patch against version 2.2.3b8-13.1 in Debian attached to
comment #1 is to re-synchronize with Debian.
