WORKING SOLUTION
After encountering this problem, I developed a very simple solution:
nano /usr/sbin/grub-probe-overlay
-[BEGIN]--
#!/bin/sh
ARGS=
for ARG in $@; do
if [ "${ARG%%[!/]*}" = "/" ]; then
This affects all releases, not just trusty. e.g. xenial and bionic
