Public bug reported:

Lenovo U410 - Windows 8.1 pre-installed, i3 proccesor, 8GB RAM, 500GB
HDD with 210 GB free for Ubuntu install.

Using Live USB drive to install, 13.04 sees the Windows partitions, (but 
doesn't mount them). The installer sees the Windows 8.1 installation and asks 
whether I want to install side by side or replace Windows.
13.10 run from a live USB however, sees the Windows partitions and can mount 
them, but the installer doesn't see the  Windows OS at all - it just says "No 
OS found".
