But synaptic doesn't allow pinning by repository (a=testing) or by
origin (origin example.com). And using a symlink from
/etc/apt/preferences to /var/lib/synaptic doesn't work either (using my
preferences file from above).

I can confirm this. A workaround is to pin the files using synaptic, as
update-manager uses synaptic's pin file (/var/lib/synaptic/preferences)
To pin a file using synaptic, select the package, and go Package Lock
Version.

Thanks for your bugreport.
Just to clarify, apt-get dist-upgrade will not prompt for sensor-applets
anymore? Only synaptic/update-manager?
