I can confirm David's issue using the avivo driver, which like the vesa
driver does not support DRI. Updating to newest xserver-xorg-core helps,
now only glxinfo crashes and not the X server.
Msdark and David, can you please attach the full Xorg.0.log from using
the ati driver?

I'm experiencing the same sort of behavior... crashes on glxinfo, and I
had trouble getting the newest Gutsy driver to work. Attached is my
Xorg.0.log.old, and I will also attach an xorg.conf.

I realize now that it may have been slightly unclear... my behavior is
under VESA driver because the 'ati' driver won't even start up on my
system, I only get a black screen. I believe it is still related, at
least insomuch as glxinfo causing X to crash.

This sounds similar to bug 124913, however that is when using the
nvidia-glx-legacy driver.
Can you please attach your full Xorg.0.log.old after resuming from a
crash?
