I can confirm it's fixed, as of image 258 (IIRC) and later. The
currently-selected file has its title displayed over the icon. Not
ideal, but it's a lot better than it was before.
As for the visual design, it seems nice if there are only a dozen or two
songs on the device. For my purposes

This is not the case any more with new scopes, which will land in the
following day or two.
FWIW, the image above shows an issue with the mediascanner (bug
#1237970), not with unity8 itself.
Either way, it's not unity8 that decides what to display, but the
respective scopes are. At least with
