I would agree with you in part ok my system has somewhat low mem in my opinion but it is within spec to running gutsy so i feel blaming the ram at that point would mean that the minimum sceps should be changed, so im not sure blaming PC is a way to fix a bug. If updatedb should run weekly maybe

If correct that updatedb is only for locate/slocate commands to update its database what makes it so important it run daily why not make it run weekly and have a manual way to run it upon locate/slocate command or just by using a command like we do with apt-file since they both search local

The problem is that it runs when gnome starts right after i log in from gdm when gnome is loading is when it is noticed never when im using it (atleast i never noticed it. Why is this different in feisty(my 2 feisty pcs do not experence this issue only gutsy, so something must have changed and

I'd wager that the poor performance is the combination of updatedb running and having only 256MB of RAM. Updatedb is creating a lot of IO and consuming a fair amount of RAM, possibly causing swap, which in turn creates more IO, which hurts the performance of the system. I'm not sure of the best
