Got my Open GL back. And just deleting the non-free driver (1.0.7184) and its dependencies was all I needed to do. So it had nothing to do with me tweaking xorg.conf to use my wide screen in proper proportions. This may be a bug in gnome-panel too. I put another applet in the bottom panel as
