The alpha2 release of Hardy seems to experience the same problem. It
crashes on startup while loading the hardware drivers. When it doesn't
crash it still gives the message: intel_rng: FWH not detected

Try alternate CD: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/
For me, I installed ubuntu server first, then upgrade it to xubuntu-
desktop :) But it's not the best practice.

Hi guys. I've just install Xubuntu 7.10 on the same notebook, and I have
the same problem. The workaround helps, but I'm open to test new
solutions.

Hi Thomas,
I'm glad you at least have a workaround now. However, we'd obviously
still like to fix the problem. I'm going to mark this as a duplicate of
bug 102982 that I had referenced earlier. Please
Hi Leann,
I have tried your suggestion and it worked! I have booted 10 times
without a crash.
The solution was adding blacklist intel_rng to the
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file.
Thanks a lot, you made my day!
Thomas.

With the newer 2.6.24-1-generic kernel the problem has not changed.
Thanks for looking into this,

Hi Thomas,
Just curious, when you say you tested Xubuntu 7.10, was that from a
LiveCD or was that from an actual installation? Thanks.

Hi Leann,
I tested it on an actual installation. About 1/3 of the times I try, it doesn't
crash during startup. This computer has a dual boot with windows XP now. XP and
windows 2000 work properly. I did the install using the alternate cd.
Thanks for looking,

The information above, the lshw command output, and the probably the
xorg.conf file, it's from the wrong computer! (a compaq) The problem is
on a HP laptop!
If the proper info is needed I will be happy to provide it.

Hi Thomas,
I'd been searching online earlier and noticed that other bug reports
with this same issue have Windows installed as well. Not sure if the
two are related or not. Some did mention something about the Windows
bootloader possibly causing problems. I'm curious if you can try doing

Hi Leann,
I have tested booting from a live cd. The crash also happens using the live cd.
Also it is not stable, sometimes it crashes, sometimes not. I have attached the
/var/log/kern.log.0 file. I crashed a few times before it booted ok. That is
when I copied the file. I don't know if it's
Some more info that might be helpful. When it booted ok from the 7:04
live cd (since the problem is the same with the new kernel as the old
one I didn't download a new live cd) just after the message saying
installing hardware drivers (where it often crashes) it said:

Hi Thomas,
The Hardy Heron kernel was recently uploaded for testing. We'd really
appreciate it if you could try testing with this newer kernel and verify
if this issue still exists. Unfortunately, the Hardy Heron Alpha1
LiveCD was released with the older 2.6.22 kernel. You'll have to

Could you possibly take a picture of where it stops booting up when
booting without the quiet splash boot options?
