Public bug reported:

when activating desktop effects a driver update is requested. upon
downloading new driver restart is requested - on restart ubuntu will
start loading w/startup screen and when entering os the screen goes
black w/message of signal out of range on my widescreen lcd monitor (my
brothers and father do not have this problem with ubuntu that they are
trying out on their non-widescreen lcd and crt monitors)- so at least we
know the refresh rate is not correct for my monitor - the real problem
comes when I reset the computer and try to load either windows xp or
ubuntu the hard drive is recognized by the bios but no longer can be
loaded and a never ending computer restart will begin as the hard drive
is no longer readable - this has happened with sata drives and ide
drives alike - the only way to recover my hard drive is to reset the
jumper on mb so that i can perform a dskchk and recover the hard drive
which can then load windows xp, but the ubuntu partition is
unrecoverable and only can be reformated to use again - if i try to
reload ubuntu after recovering hard drive and load all options giving
(ie. different versions, recover mode it will fail and state that the
partitioned drive had an error (can't remember exact words) and is
unloadable. my computer info is as follows: mb_foxconn C55A01 -
bios_American Megatrends Inc. Version :080014 - chipset_nVidia nForce
680i - memory_G Skill :F2-6400CL4-1GBHK - cpu_Intel xCore 2 Duo E6600 -
monitor_VX2025wm (needed resolution of 1680x1050 at 60Hz) - gpu_GeForce
7950 GT - main os_windows xp sp2. when using a seperate hard drive
other than my primary it only renders that hard drive unreadable or on a
virtual hard drive the same - in both these cases it is necessary to
reformate the drives to recover. but when using ubuntu on my primary
drive on a partitioned section it then becomes a major failure in that
all info on disk is at high risk as stated above.....Is there a way to
get a monitor to work again without rebooting when this happens? cause
you now know that rebooting is not a savory option....will this be fixed
in the next full version release in the fall?....like many of us, Ubuntu
is an option that window users like me and my family can actually think
about switching to in the future - it seems to be the most promising
option for the future for those of us looking for an alternative, but
are not willing to learn code either - please respond as I would love to
get to know this os better - on my off seasons(sprinkler repairman) I
actually fix computers for people (strange prof. combo i know) and would
love nothing more than to help spread the use of a great alternative,
but need help on the main problem that I have run into. - thanks, steve
