I'm now comparing /var/log/Xorg.log and /var/log/Xorg.log.old. The second is
from the last crash and is attached. The files are moreorless identical apart
from different time stamps and VT number and an extra two lines at the bottom
of the crash file. I've attached the crash file

it works with xzgv opening other images, including the
mediumubuntulogo.png on this launchpad page.
The xserver does restart most of the time, but it doesn't seem very
stable with a reboot. If I try to switch to a text terminal, the
console frequently locks up and acts generally strangely.

The crash happens when you run xzgv locally too, no need to run it over
ssh. I just opened the image from nautilus choosing xzgv as my
alternate viewer application.
On this occasion, I got a backtrace in Xorg.log too. This is attached
