This is now fixed in Gutsy:
* debian/extra/java_home: Added paths for SUN JDK 6.
Closes: #415712, #418877.
Please reopen if you still have the issue.
** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #415712
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=415712
** Also affects: eclipse (Debian)
Eclipse works fine for me once I set javac to point to the correct
location.
sudo update-alternatives --config javac
set it to the sun java option
and to setup jre correctly
sudo update-alternatives --config java
set it to the sun java option
The problem is /etc/alternatives java and javac
** Description changed:
Binary package hint: eclipse
1. Install Gutsy
2. Install Sun Java 6
3. Install Eclipse by using apt-get / aptitude / synaptic to install package
'eclipse'
4. Run Eclipse from Applications-Programming-Eclipse
5. Get Error Message
Applicable to all known
Maybe this should be configurable as a debconf setting in the package,
as many users expect Eclipse to be run on Sun Java if installed.

To fix it, modify /etc/eclipse/java_home and add the following line:
/usr/lib/jvm/sun-6-java
Think it should be /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun
