I installed latest driver and then generated a new xorg.conf as
described above. I note that previously the monitor had been defined as
default but now is correctly identified with model number, (This is a
desktop system withRadeon 9800 Pro with external TFT screen).
MonitorLayout option is DPMS.
I don't know if this helps anyone, but I tried to downgrade back to
current Gutsy's version 6.6.193-1ubuntu1, but that version didn't
understand my new dual head setup and I ended up in cloned single
monitor mode. I then went to the 6.7.192-1ubuntu1 from

Okey... Didn't even know what a zaphod mode was. :/ But I got my dual

All I had to do was add a Virtual 2580 1024 to the new single monitor

xrandr --output
I hope you didn't ask that from me Tormod, since I don't even use

But I found out that it's still possible to have a static setting for
dual head in xorg.conf. Otherwise you'd have to put the xrandr command
somewhere where it's runned after boot for KDM (or GDM). Here's
(Sorry for being off-topic, but since we discuss dual-head already)
After what I have learned today, zaphod is when you have two Screen
sections in xorg.conf on one card. Xinerama then combines these two
screens. The new xrandr 1.2 can do dual-head with one screen, like
what TuxFan explains. So
I have not tried without any .conf, only with the one produced by dpkg-

not freeze under any version of the driver, only a blank screen on X. I
can still hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get to a console and swap back to VESA

David, did you try without an xorg.conf? Does the machine freeze or just
