Did you check your user's permissions?
There was a bug earlier in beta where the user was not automatically
added to the groups use tape drives, use scanner and send and
recieve faxes.
I had the exact same error message and adding those groups to my profile
fixed it, the detection part that is.
This is a duplicate of bug 195782 then. Can you please followup there,
especially with the debug information I asked on that bug? THank you!

I had the same problem with my HP PSC 750 and after a lot of research I
finally found out that both packages sane and sane-utils were not
installed by default in Hardy. After manually installing both my scanner
worked like before.
It might be worth a try to see if this solves your issues with HP
I believe this is fixed in the latest hplip package in Hardy, please see
bug 195782. Please report back if it still does not work for you.

Problem is the same here but now in Hardy Heron Beta, in Gutsy Gibbon my
C3170 Printer/Scanner worked perfectly, my printer was recognized and my
scanner was recognized and worked well, in Hardy my printer is
automaticly recognized when connecting the usb port but the scanner is
not recognized and
same problem here
