I just tested out a few prior trusty kernels, ended up back at my latest
(3.13.0-36-generic). This time I couldn't reproduce my issue on any of
my installed kernel versions...

I have the same issue which resolves by reloading the driver. This started
after I upgraded to 14.04.
I am running Lubuntu on a DELL FX160. Graphics controller = Intel
915GM/GMS/910GML.
The mouse cursor is shown on my screen but does not move until I reload the
driver.

Tested (partially) against upsteam kernel 3.17.
Works OK (as far as I can tell) in that mouse works on greeter screen,
which it doesn't with standard 14.4 kernel (3.13.0-34 currently).
Can't get to main desktop because using proprietary NVidia drivers and
had problems trying to install 2x header
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.17 kernel[0].
If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.
