I just got confused by this too, when I noticed a 1 badge on the
settings icon in the launcher. When I tap on the settings icon, it takes
me to the settings app as expected, but there is absolutely no visual
indication as to what the 1 badge is for. Whatever the badge(s) on the
launcher icon apply

That's a good question. However, opening the Updates section is the only
way to trigger a manual check for updates. It's also likely that we will
indeed have updates history in future.

This report makes me wonder why we have an updates option at all, when
an update is available it is indicated 1) in the notification list 2) as
a badge on the app icon in the launcher and 3) toward the top of the
main settings panel. When is there a case where I need to check? Since
we don't
