Public bug reported: I upgraded from Feisty Fawn to Gusty, and now I can't log in! Both default gnome and failsafe gnome play log in sounds (after I installed a pulseaudio compat library, this was not done automatically), but show nothing. remotely launching an xterm on DISPLAY 0 gives me something to work with, and gnome-session has gotten far enough to load my theme, but not much else (including metacity / compiz). Not too many programs will start due to dbus errors (can not connect to bus), and the following is in .xsession-errors (although I've tried many times, I can't pin down the name of the program):
