Albert's comment fixed it my Mac Mini problem with a single LCD monitor.
I have a new Intel Mac Mini with an Intel GMA 950 graphics card.
System-Administration-Screens and Graphics indicates Gutsy is using
the intel experimental modessing driver for the Intel 945.
It all seems to work okay

Unchecking Detect Outputs and changing the default output
640x480+0+0 to 1920x1200+0+0 makes compiz behave as expected,
although I'm not sure what I'll see then I disconnect from the external
display and compiz tries to draw on my internal LCD screen at 1200x900.

feeling your screen resolution is larger than your max texture size.
