The effect is significantly different depending on bitrate, a 128bit
stream / MP3 is unbearable while at 320k it is hardly noticeable.

I have the same.
this started in feisty. Stuck around on gutsy, and still present in
hardy on my asus laptop with ac97 chipset. Anybody have a solution?
