I see the same output, regardless of sudo:
ojw@tpx220:~$ sudo garmin_get_info
garmin unit could not be opened!

hi oliver,
unfortunately this didn't resolve the problem.
I removed the module (lsmod | grep garmin showed nothing), however the output
of garmin_get_info still showed
garmin unit could not be opened!

I guess you also tried sudo garmin_get_info?
It that works then it could be a permission problem with your USB device.
Otherwise I have no more ideas.
