network-manager in hardy as some additional kinds of workarounds for
dealing with wpasupplicant sloppyness. Do you still experience this
issue with hardy?

yes, please attach your /var/log/syslog with the _new_ wpasupplicant
running. then please attach a /var/log/syslog with the old wpasupplicant
running (sudo apt-get install wpasupplicant=0.6.0-3).

I upgraded to the latest NetworkManager, and the problem seems to be
solved. I also tried and installed the wpa_supplicant package I found
at http://ppa.launchpad.net/asac/ubuntu/pool/main/w/wpasupplicant/, and
everything seems to work fine too.
