NTFS on Linux is slower than on Windows. To rule a hardware or usb
problem format the usb stick with ext4 and test again.

Hardware and USB problem have both already been ruled out by trying the
exact same thing on the exact same machine...but under Windows 7 x64 and
everything worked beautifully.
