For me this was also the case in 2.0.3-5 (in Debian/Wheezy) as it is in
2.2.0~rc2-2 (in Debian/Jessie). This is the output of the requested
command issued on Debian/Jessie in case that's of any help.
$ vlc -vv vlc://quit
VLC media player 2.2.0-rc2 Weatherwax (revision 2.2.0-rc1-118-g22fda39)
It looks like the JACK is not properly installed. Can you please paste
the output of 'vlc -vv vlc://quit' ?
