This still affects Ubuntu 16.04. I see that gnome-software shows the title as gedit rather than Text Editor. That leads me to believe that there is a problem with the .desktop files or the appstream info gedit is providing. Maybe Unity is using a special value and that's why Unity shows Text

It is shown as Text Editor in the Unity Launcher as well as in the Dash (screenshot attached). Was that a change that Ubuntu made or was the upstream decision that it should be Text Editor in some places but gedit in others? The bug that you linked doesn't seem to reflect the current situation on
