Hello
The problem is now solved for me using the command xrandr --auto (but
still pressing Fn+F8 don't work)
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400, running Ubuntu 8.10 (upgraded from 8.04
that is upgraded from 7.10)
I'm so happy cause I hava a presentation 5 hours later!
Thanks :)

One fix confirmation and no response in two months so I guess this
report can be closed. Feel free to reopen it again if the issue still
happens with current Hardy and Dell Inspiron 6xxx. To reopen the bug

It was fixed relatively quickly. Thanks a bunch.

It's not a bug in the xrandr program, but more likely in the driver.
Please test Ubuntu 8.04.

I can confirm the bug on a Dell Latitude D510 (Intel graphics card).
The machine is running Kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon and it's a major nuisance
since I can not hold any presentations using a video projector due to this
issue.
The key combo used to work when I was running Kubuntu 6.10. However,

Same on a Dell D830. The Fn+F8 key that should activate VGA output is not
working.
The log says:
[ 280.168152] atkbd.c: Unknown key pressed (translated set 2, code 0x8b on
isa0060/serio0).
[ 280.168161] atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes e00b keycode' to make it known.
I'm using latest Ubuntu Hardy.

it doesn't matter where is the problem as the final result is it doesn't
work
the problem isn't submitted against gnome or any other component but
against Ubuntu as a whole.

it was working with beta version while using the live CD but after
installing the release it stops working again
neither pressing fn + f8 nor xrandr --auto do anything
they simply do nothing.

ok, it works on gusty beta but not as supposed
assume we start with only laptop LCD working
it should switch between 3 situations
1 - redirect all output to VGA out and switch laptop LCD off (to save battery).
2 - switch both on.
3 - return to original situation (laptop LCD on and VGA out off).
Thanks for your comments. This does not appear to be a bug report as
such. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make
more sense to raise your question in the support tracker.

when pressing this hotkey on Windows a small window appears (like the window
that appears when pressing ALT+TAB) to choose between available monitors eg.
laptop monitor and external monitor (or video projector or what is attached to
the VGA output port in the computer).
