After this error the updater hung and I logged out back in and was
able to use some of the system: could not mount drives from Natilus, for
example. When I ran Updater it started configuring stuff as if the
install was continuing. After I rebooted basically the same thing: I
could log in and
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

this is simply because efi partition is mounted as read-only, I changed
fstab to mount it as read-write and all is know well and good.
