I can't reproduce your problem, are you sure you are using OOo Writer
when you have this problem? There is already a bug similiar to what you
are talking about for OOo Calc, but this bug is specifically about OOo
Writer.

Same problem (Oo 2.4, Hardy Heron) noticed, but it doesn't need to be split
over pages:
1- merge several cells
2- highlight a cell (shift + arrow down then up)
3- try to enter any data in the highlighted cell: the system should crash at
that stage.

I believe that this bug has been corrected in Ubuntu hardy
openoffice.org 1:2.4.0~rc2-1ubuntu3 so I am marking it as Fix Released.

I have that problem too.
OpenOffice 2.3.0-1ubuntu5.3. (Ubuntu Gutsy)
3. I choose to merge cells. Crash guaranteed.
