This bug also affects me. Running Kubuntu 15.04 and I definitely do have
Pidgin set to Always show not hidden in the tray.

Besides lack of icon in systray, icon of pidgin does not show notification of
getting new message in icons-only task manager mod.
Skype or another software works fine with it.

I'm also affected by this bug.
The icon does not show up and when I hit the close button pidgin exists
directly. With older KDE versions the close button just sent pidgin to
the tray.
Would be great if this gets fixed :)
