edit /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf and edit indicators or
show-indicators option: add sound to it. Note that if you add it at
the end of the line, it will appear to the right of the power button on
the lock screen.
** Changed in: lightdm-gtk-greeter (Ubuntu)
Status: New = Fix
Right, silly me, I forgot about indicator-sound. Apologies.

Removes your_user_name user from audio group. You need to logout/reboot.
It is very rare to need to have your user in audio group.
I wasn't in the audio group. I put ~sound at the end of the list and
rebooted to no avail. I added the tilde because all the others has
tildes. What else could I do?

power management program. Would checking for, and removing, my user in the
audio group be a potential solution? How do I do this?

Actually all music playback should stop when you lock your session, did
you do anything to make this work? (E.g. adding your user to the audio
group – while not advised – has that effect.)
There is no way you can control audio playback from the greeter and
we're currently not planning to add
