After the previous failed update, I ran the install -f command again (this time with a much more useful response and an invite to do a upgrade, which I accepted). After that completed, I again ran the update and it at last succeeded! Unless there is any useful new info in this error dialogue,

Thank you for the response. I have tried both actions recommended: clean and install-f and ran the update again. The result was no different, with the completion message Package operation failed. Please advise how to safely run fsck. Is the only real solution a complete clean re-install of
