Stefan, thank you for pointing me in the right direction. On my Athlon
Classic, I added the ide-generic and ide-disk modules to the /etc
/initramfs-tools/modules. (I couldn't find an ide-core module) I then

I experienced the same bug after upgrading and iMac G3 from Edubuntu
7.04 to 7.10. Adding the ide-core module to

sudo update-initramfs -k all -c
fixed it for me. So there is no need to compile a new kernel.

Yes this can be the problem.
Now, I just compiled the kernel myself from the source code
linux-source-2.6.22. Before I did that, I compared config-2.6.20-15-powerpc and
config-2.6.22-14-powerpc and I saw that 'CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE=y' in
config-2.6.20-15-powerpc, but in config-2.6.22-14-powerpc I
Perhaps related to Bug 133666, which speaks of issues with ATA / IDE
hard-drive detection. The other bug lists a patch, but that patch has
not been applied to Ubuntu yet.

I removed the 'quiet' and 'splash' options and now I see that linux-
image-2.6.22-15-powerpc is trying to access /dev/hda4. It seems that the
block device /dev/hda4 doesn't exist for that kernel, allthough I have
such a partition (linux-image-2.6.20-15-powerpc can boot). I tried to
