I have the same problem with Ubuntu 16.04. When I log in I got the resolution of 1280x1024. I can change this to 1600x1200 and it works fine until I log out. It seems the log-in screen is also 1280x1024 which I can live with. When I log in it looks like the resolution increases temporarily

I'm experiencing this bug as well. Running Xubuntu (Xfce) 15.10 (wily) x86 (kernel 4.2.0-16) connected to a 1360x768 Hyundai IQ television monitor via a standard VGA cable. In 14.04 (trusty), I can manually set the screen resolution to 1360x768 and it will survive reboots, but in 15.10 the setting
